Labor Day 2020

Just like the year 2020 has been so far, Labor Day isn’t a “happy” day either. While the real-life Fantasy Island host, Donald Trump, tries to paint a rosy picture,

Reality tells an entirely different story.

The truth about job growth is that the sitting president has very little to do with creating jobs outside of filling federal job vacancies. Job growth or loss is dictated by the private sector and the decisions made in corporate boardrooms across the world.

That said, there’s a cottage industry built upon the notion that a president is responsible for jobs in his term. In reality, decisions made during one term will determine the direction of the country years after those decisions are made. For example, the job growth in his term that Trump tries to take credit for is due to decisions made by Obama in 2009-2010 to dig the country out of a recession.  If you want to take credit for job growth, then you also are credited with job loss.

Compared to recent administrations, the Trump group is the only administration with negative job growth. While it’s tempting to blame him based on his personal past history of destroying jobs, it’s not entirely Trump’s fault.  Trump did create the environment for the massive loss in employment with his abject failure of dealing with CoVID-19, but he didn’t directly order employers to fire tens of millions of employees.

If Trump loses in November, he will have the distinction of having more job loss in his term than job gains.  In fact, you have to go all the way back to Herbert Hoover to find the previous president with that distinction.

This could have all been avoided with long-term strategic planning by the government. We’ve seen America cycle through employment eras before, and that’s what we’re seeing now. The 1800s saw America’s labor centered in agriculture. The 1900s gave us a change from agriculture to manufacturing. The 2000s will see us switching over from manufacturing to service based jobs. Planning effectively helps to smooth out the transition period.

Labor, like America itself, is dynamic and constantly changing to best fit into the current world environment. As we celebrate Labor Day and shift into fall season, let’s not forget how we got to where we are whether good or bad. I’m not feeling like this particular Labor Day is a “happy” occasion, so I will simply say thanks to all those who labor tirelessly to benefit us all.

Thanks to ALL of the essential workers, even those who do not get the commiserate essential worker pay or benefits. This year helped to show who we honestly rely on to keep things moving when our backs are against a wall.  I offer condolences to the family and friends of the workers who died this year trying to keep us all alive and well. Their sacrifices do not go unnoticed.

Last, but not least, to all my fellow Americans, let us labor to ensure that the angry minority does not shred the great country that we have all worked on building. We are all better when we work together, and there’s no one specific group that is superior to any other. Enjoy your Labor Day holiday. It was paid for by the blood, sweat, and tears of generations before.

  1. I’m here to say I was wrong. College football is happening.
In past years I have guiltily ordered up Sling TV to watch the games. This year I can’t. These kids should have a full year of just academics. That’s the right thing to do.

  2. Today as we remember the 9/11 attacks. . .

For some, excavating the past isn’t an adventure,

it’s more akin to tearing a Band-Aid off an open wound.

The campaign of the POTUS who claims to be following the science kicked out a reporter because they weren’t following the science
You can’t make that up and have people support it unless you are Trump and his supporters
I dare say it’s cult like

    • We would have been lucky if all Trump did was sleep. He managed to actively create so much damage. We will never know how many more he killed with deregulation and pulling out of the climate accords.

  3. I never thought the Trump campaign would ever be able to top playing “Rockin in the Free World” or “Knockin on Heaven’s Door” for being clueless, but I obviously had too little imagination.

  4. Let’s see. Oh yeah 17. That’s when I had a few girlfriends at the same time. Not bragging and actually apologized to them all for being young and stupid. I would go to Whitey Bulger owned bars in Southie and skateboard on anything that had either an incline or a wicked steep drop off. I used to be able to launch myself ten plus feet in the air with a skateboard and land.

    • A long time ago, I knew this guy who had an entourage of 5 or 6 girls following him around. Everywhere. He wasn’t rich or famous or anything… I was never able to wrap my head around that one.. It was seriously like a cult.

  5. Trump says if there are riots on election night, ‘we’ll put them down very quickly’
What the frick? The only person talking about rioting is Trump.
If it snows on election night, will he change Christmas to Nov 25th?

  6. RadioFreeTom has been live-tweeting Trump’s insane pressers for a few months. I just went through his twitter feed (Daniel Dale is on vacay).
Near as I can tell, Trump appeared stoned out of his mind and was rambling like crazy.

  7. Mr. Erickson believes that Trump didn’t tell us about the pandemic because we would have thought he was just distracting us from the impeachment.
First off, many of us can hold two things in our brains at the same time. At least people making decisions can.
And the senate voted on 2/5 to not impeach, so…..when is he going to tell us our kids are at risk?

  9. Officially vacation time. My last few jobs have been with new customers that truly appreciated us.

    Made the donations.

Tried to get Jay to go fishing with me via Twitter. As you would imagine. He did not respond.

Gonna get some R&R and be ready for the end of the year.

Hope y’all can carve out some time for yourselves. Stay cool. Stay safe. And stay healthy.

  10. A hit dog will holler !

Trump says, it was a hit job by Bob Woodward . . .

    How?

    Trump agreed to the interview.

    He is his own source.

His loose lips are sinking his ship.

    • I am torn. If Ivanka had been boned sawed, would Trump have gone to war or would he have sold them more military equipment because you know, the money lining his pocket is more important?

  13. Another gotcha moment down in Albany. My relatives said the longed for the days when the news didn’t spin things. They said, their are no Walter Cronkite’s anymore.
I told them, Walter and the rest of the media knew about JFK being a whore dog. More specifically he was porking a Russian spy. Walter and the media said nothing.
So you would prefer the news deciding what you get to hear, rather than an open media?
    Fuck that.

They are training their guns at the Republican politicians who keep mum about Trump’s fuck ups.
I hope they change enough minds to flip the Senate.

    • Fact. Bill Clinton (who I never voted for) still did his job while being impeached. If memory serves that included sending missiles to try and kill Osama bin Laden. No one claimed it was a distraction.

    • I see things like this, remember that I have family that I will not see again when I go home, and the rage within my body would liquify metal in seconds. It’s taking everything I have to not go on Twitter and cuss out every single person who feeds Trump’s ego.

All this could have been avoided if Trump cared about anything other than his own bank account. We’d have sports, jobs, and something resembling normalcy. EE can go suck start a Remington 870 for all I care.

BTW. When you shared the Covid experience in your family. I was truly stunned. I didn’t then and still don’t how to give proper condolences. It shook me. You’re a tougher man than I and I wish I had words for what your family went through.

But your rage. That I get, brother. That I get.
