A life ruined

Why would any parent allow their 9-year-old to shoot a fully automatic weapon?

I ask that question seriously because I grew up around guns, and I started shooting guns long before the age of 9.  The rule was that you couldn’t shoot any gun that you could not handle on your own.  Therefore, I learned to shoot using BB guns and .22 rifles long before I touched anything more powerful.

I enjoy target shooting, and I’m sure that I am not the only one that does.  My early interactions with guns were not anything traumatic or jarring enough to leave any permanent mental scars.  I don’t think this young girl will grow up with the same appreciation for firearms that many Americans have.  Just call it a hunch of mine.

Now, there’s a family missing a father, and another family has a 9-year-old that is probably mentally traumatized because of a momentary lapse in judgement.  I’ve seen numerous “experts” chiming in faulting the range instructor, and there’s no way that he can defend himself against anything they say.  I don’t know how many of these “experts” are raising the question of why a parent would allow their child to shoot a gun that many adults can’t control.

I haven’t tried to watch the video, and I have no desire to see it.  Hopefully, someone will ensure that child gets the help and counseling that she needs.  The parents may want to sit in on a few sessions themselves as I’m sure they’ll have some things to talk about too.

  1. XTC says it best, IMO. Despite this being a very catchy and rhythmic post-punk toe-tapper, it’s got a valuable message. If you’re a vinyl aficionado, you can find this song on XTC’s classic English Settlement album.

FWIW, I can’t get to Youtube on this network, but this should be a video of the song. Worth a listen if you’ve got a few moments.

    “Melt The Guns”

    Programmes of violence as entertainment
brings the disease into your room
we know the germ which is man-made in metal
is really a key to your own tomb

    prevention is better than cure
    bad apples affecting the pure
you’ll gather your senses I’m sure
    then agree to

melt the guns melt the guns
melt the guns and never more to fire them
melt the guns melt the guns
melt the guns and never more desire them

children will want them mothers supply them
as long as your killers are heroes.
and all the media will fiddle while rome burns
    acting like modern-time Neros.

    prevention is better than cure
    bad apples affecting the pure
you’ll gather your senses I’m sure
    then agree to

melt the guns melt the guns
melt the guns and never more to fire them
melt the guns melt the guns
melt the guns and never more desire them

I’m speaking to the justice league of america
the u s of a hey you yes you in particular!
when it comes to the judgement day and you’re stood at the gates with your weaponry
you dare clasp your hands in prayer and start quoting me
    ‘cos we say….

our father we’ve managed to contain the epidemic in one place now
let’s hope they shoot themselves instead of others
help to sterilize the race now.
we’ve trapped the cause of the plague in the land of the free and the home of the brave
if we listen quietly we can hear them shooting from grave to grave.

you ought to melt the guns melt the guns
melt the guns and never more to fire them
melt the guns melt the guns melt the guns and never more desire them.
