New TV network

Over the past weekend, I happened to stumble across a TV network that has quickly been added to my favorite’s list.  I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I do have a few shows that I enjoy.  They usually involve car chases, shootouts, explosions, or a combination of those.  The exception is DIY Network, and I just like that because I like woodworking projects.

Flipping through my DirecTV guide this past Saturday, I came upon the El Rey Network.  It was founded and launched this past December by Robert Rodriguez, American movie director who gave us El Mariachi, Desperado, and From Dusk Till Dawn, amongst other movies.  I spent all afternoon and evening Saturday watching old Shaw Brothers Studio kung-fu movies.  I can’t even remember whether I blinked my eyes or not.  Tonight, I’ve watched two Sonny Chiba movies, and I don’t really feel like calling it quits yet.

I like the newer movies, but for me, there’s nothing like the old kung-fu movies with English overdub that’s so bad that they talk without their mouths moving.  I don’t know what’s so captivating about them, but I’m drawn to that genre to the point where I had started buying DVDs whenever I could find movies that I liked.  Now, thanks to Mr. Rodriguez, I don’t have to buy them all, and he’s probably saved my marriage and my income as a result.

The network has a pretty good lineup of action movies and shows.  This afternoon, I was watching Starsky and Hutch for the first time in I don’t know how long and memories came flooding back.  They have a TV series based on From Dusk Till Dawn that premieres this month as well.

If you have DirecTV, check Channel 341 to see if you have it if that’s the kind of stuff you like watching.  If you don’t see posts from me for a while, you’ll know what I’m doing now.   🙂

  1. Sounds like an absolute hoot.

Must take issue with one thing you wrote, though:

“car chases, shootouts, explosions, or a combination of those. The exception is DIY Network”

Don’t the best DIY shows have some sort of explosion?
